Car hire

Which documents and driver details should I confirm before hiring a car in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

The short answer

Check the issuing country of every driver’s licence, the driving documents required for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the rental company’s acceptance rules for the chosen vehicle. Bring the physical licence, the required identity document and any required International Driving Permit.

For a UK licence holder renting a car within Bosnia and Herzegovina, current UK government advice says to carry a 1968 International Driving Permit in the car. Arrange it before travelling.

The UK rule depends on where the car is hired

UK government travel advice for Bosnia and Herzegovina says a UK driving licence is valid when driving your own vehicle or a car hired outside Bosnia and Herzegovina. When renting or using someone else’s vehicle within the country, it says you must also have the 1968 IDP with you in the car and obtain it before travel.

Carry the valid driving licence as well: the permit does not replace it. The GOV.UK IDP guide lists Bosnia and Herzegovina under the 1968 permit and tells people hiring a car to check the rental company’s requirements too.

The same guide says a UK photocard licence can be used in Croatia without an IDP. That Croatia rule does not remove the Bosnia requirement for a car hired locally in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For a licence issued elsewhere, check the relevant destination authority or embassy for the issuing country, licence format and length of stay. Passport nationality and licence country can differ, so give both where they affect the answer.

Do not confuse six months with 12 months

The two periods answer different questions:

  • Six months is the driving-licence threshold in the UK government’s Bosnia advice. It says UK licence holders staying longer than six months need a local driving licence.
  • 12 months is a supplier acceptance condition on Yes.ba’s rental requirements. It says the driving licence must have been held for at least 12 months.

A traveller visiting for two weeks can still fail the supplier’s 12-month experience condition. A traveller who has held a licence for many years still needs to address the official rule for a stay exceeding six months. Neither period replaces the other.

Check every driver and vehicle category

Yes.ba currently lists a minimum age of 21, with some vehicle categories requiring 25 or above and a possible under-25 surcharge. It says additional drivers must meet the requirements and be registered in advance or at collection. Its page recommends an IDP for a licence outside Latin script; that supplier wording does not override a country-specific official requirement such as the UK rule above.

Consider two proposed drivers aged 24 and 30. The 24-year-old has held a UK licence for two years; the 30-year-old obtained theirs eight months ago. The first needs the chosen category and any young-driver charge checked. The second does not meet this supplier’s published 12-month licence condition. Making the older traveller the main driver would not fix that shortfall.

Send the details that settle the booking

For each driver, provide the age, licence issuing country, licence category, date first held, expiry date and script. Add the vehicle category, rental dates and proposed card type. Ask which physical documents each driver must present and whether each person is accepted for that rental.

Share personal document numbers only through the provider’s appropriate private process. Once driver eligibility is clear, check debit-card and deposit requirements separately.
