Car hire

Can I hire a car using a debit card, and what deposit should I check?

The short answer

Possibly. Yes.ba says it accepts debit cards for most vehicle categories, but that is a policy for one provider rather than a rule for every rental. Check your chosen category, collection point and physical card before booking. The card must be in the main driver’s name.

Allow for two separate amounts: the rental price and the security deposit. Even when the deposit is refundable, it can reduce the money available in your account during the trip and for several business days afterwards.

Separate the rental price from the deposit

The rental price pays for the hire and any agreed extras. The security deposit is a separate amount held against the rental. A low daily rate therefore does not tell you how much money or available card balance you need at collection.

Yes.ba’s payment page says a refundable deposit is required at pickup, held on a credit or debit card and varied by vehicle category. It also says the amount is shown before booking confirmation. Use the figure in your own written offer rather than assuming that another car or category has the same deposit.

Check the card against the actual offer

Before paying, settle these points together:

QuestionWhy it matters
Is this debit card accepted for the chosen vehicle and collection point?“Most categories” does not mean every rental.
Must the physical card be presented, and whose name must be on it?The published policy names the main driver.
What are the rental price and deposit, in which currencies? You need enough available funds for both.
Is the deposit reserved or charged? The effect on your balance and any bank fees can differ.
Do extra drivers, equipment or a different return point change the total? The useful comparison is the complete price.

If your bank imposes daily limits, foreign-payment controls or its own pre-authorisation rules, deal with those before travel. Card acceptance by the rental company does not guarantee that the bank will approve the transaction.

Understand what happens to the deposit

Yes.ba’s rental requirements say the provider initiates release after the car is returned without damage or delay, while the bank may take up to seven business days to reflect it. That timing is a provider example, not a universal bank promise.

Keep the collection condition record, return record and deposit receipt. Do not build the next week’s spending around immediate access to the released amount.

Do not rely on cash alone

Yes.ba says cash may be accepted for the rental fee at selected locations, while a valid card is still required for the deposit. If you plan to pay any part in cash, have the collection point confirm both arrangements in the same written offer.

Once the payment arrangements are clear, save them with your Sarajevo Airport collection instructions. The card, driver and collection details should all describe the same booking.
