Travel answers
What access details should I confirm before choosing a stay or outing?
Information checked 18 October 2026.
The short answer
Describe the exact journey you need to make and ask about the room, vehicle and visitor route you would actually use. Check every handover, from aircraft to onward vehicle, vehicle to entrance, entrance to room or exhibition, and back again. A broad “accessible” label cannot answer those connected questions.
Turn your needs into practical details
Write down what decides whether the trip works. This may include maximum walking distance, steps you can manage, wheelchair or scooter dimensions, the way you transfer into a vehicle, bathroom layout, seating, hearing or vision support, a quiet space, or assistance with communication.
Share the functional detail needed to arrange the service. You rarely need to send medical records with an enquiry. “I cannot climb steps and need to remain in my wheelchair” gives a transport provider a clear task. “I have reduced mobility” does not.
UN Tourism’s accessibility resources place access across facilities, transport and tourism services. That whole-journey view is useful in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the room, old-street approach and vehicle can present different questions. For accessibility-focused travel information, see Accessible.ba. Confirm specific arrangements with the property or operator.
Trace the route through a stay
Begin at the vehicle drop-off or parking place. Ask about surface, gradient, kerbs and steps on the way to the entrance; door width and threshold; the route to reception; lift dimensions; corridors; and the exact room offered. Inside the room, request the measurements or photographs that determine your choice, such as the clear doorway, space beside the bed, shower threshold and toilet transfer space.
Make sure every answer refers to your room category. A hotel may have one suitable room while the standard room pictured in a booking result has a different bathroom. A cabin described as ground-floor may still have steps from the parking place or an internal sleeping loft.
Agree what help staff can provide, at what time and whether it must be arranged in advance. For a late arrival, check that the same entrance and lift remain available after reception hours.
Connect airport assistance to onward transport
Sarajevo Airport asks passengers who need reduced-mobility assistance to notify their airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before the scheduled flight. Its PRM guidance distinguishes whether a passenger can manage aircraft steps or move to a cabin seat, and describes arrival assistance as continuing from the aircraft to the next transport point on the public side.
Book and confirm the onward vehicle separately. Give its provider the mobility-aid dimensions, transfer method, travelling position, securing requirements, people and luggage. Agree the public-side handover point with both parts of the journey. The airport-transfer answer shows how to put those details into one arrival brief.
If personal help is needed inside a toilet, ask exactly what the airport, venue or companion must provide. Assistance to a facility does not necessarily include personal care inside it.
Ask for the actual route through an outing
For a museum, cave, old town or rural visit, ask for distances, surfaces, gradients, steps, lifts or ramps, rest points and toilets on the route you would follow. Confirm which rooms, exhibition levels or viewpoints that route reaches. A venue can have some accessible facilities without every part of the experience being accessible.
Current conditions matter too. A broken lift, road works, snow or a changed entrance can alter a previously suitable plan. Reconfirm any essential feature shortly before travelling and agree an alternative that you would still enjoy.
For a guided outing, ask whether the guide can adjust the pace, where the vehicle can stop and what happens if your party cannot use one section. For an outdoor specialist activity, discuss suitability with the responsible operator and obtain appropriate clinical advice for individual health questions.
Keep the final answers together in a short access plan: arrival handover, vehicle, entrance, room, essential facilities, outing route, assistance and backup. That gives every provider the same clear picture and exposes any missing link before the trip.
