Should I take the train, bus, a hire car or a transfer from Sarajevo to Mostar?

The short answer

Take the train if its timetable suits you and you want a straightforward city-to-city journey. Check the bus as well, as a better departure time may matter more than the mode itself. Hire a car when Konjic or other stops are part of the pleasure, or when you will keep driving after Mostar. A private transfer earns its price when you want door-to-door ease, have several large bags or can share the cost across a group.

The best choice is the one that works from your accommodation in Sarajevo to your accommodation in Mostar, not merely from one station to another.

Train: the relaxed city-to-city choice

For two city stays with manageable luggage, rail is the most appealing place to start. You can relax for the journey without collecting a car, navigating or finding parking at either end.

The ŽFBH 2025/2026 timetable shows Sarajevo departures towards Čapljina at 07:15 and 16:46. Use the journey and ticket search on the ŽFBH homepage with Sarajevo, Mostar and your travel date to see the Mostar arrival and fare, and to check that your chosen train is available to buy. The operator also explains how online ticketing works. If the result is unclear, the official contact page gives station-information numbers for Sarajevo and Mostar.

Hand luggage that you can carry aboard and place above or below your seat travels free under the operator’s domestic conditions. Larger luggage may be charged under the applicable tariff, so ask before travelling if you have bulky cases.

Konjic needs a little more thought. A through ticket is not automatically a leisurely hop-on, hop-off ticket: an interrupted journey must be validated at the station where you stop, and the break does not extend the ticket’s validity. If Konjic is an important part of the day, confirm two workable rail legs before booking. Otherwise, a hire car is usually the more natural choice.

Bus: useful when the time fits better

Bus can be the better option when its departure sits more comfortably around checkout, check-in or an onward connection. Search SARAJEVO → MOSTAR (I) for your date on the Centrotrans Sarajevo–Mostar page. Check the named departure and arrival points, the fare and the luggage terms before paying.

Add the cost and time of getting to the Sarajevo departure point and from the Mostar stop to your accommodation. That gives you a fair comparison with the train and with a door-to-door transfer.

Hire car: best for stops and onward travel

Choose a car when the journey itself is part of the trip. It gives you room for a proper stop in Konjic and makes sense if Mostar is the beginning of a wider road trip rather than the end of your driving.

Yes.ba offers one-way rentals between Sarajevo and Mostar. Ask for a dated quote with the collection and return locations, rental period and any one-way charge, then add fuel and parking. If you will use the car for several days, the seven-day route example can help you work out which days genuinely need it.

For a straightforward transfer between city stays, a car can add cost and responsibility without adding much freedom. Compare the complete price before deciding.

Private transfer: pay for ease

A private transfer is the comfort choice. It is particularly useful after a tiring journey, with several large cases, or for a group that can divide one vehicle price between them.

Use Transfers.ba to explore point-to-point travel, then ask for one quote covering your full party, luggage and exact accommodation addresses. If you want a stop on the way, have its duration and any waiting charge included in writing. The airport-transfer checklist covers the same useful details about vehicle size, meeting points and what is included.

A quick way to decide

For one or two people going from central Sarajevo to central Mostar, compare the train and bus first. For a group with lots of luggage, compare those totals with one transfer quote. For a day built around Konjic or for onward touring, price a hire car.
