Car hire
When does a seven-day Bosnia route make car hire useful?
Local bus information checked 18 October 2026; rental information checked 10 October 2026.
The short answer
A week split between Sarajevo and Mostar does not automatically need a rental car. A weekday city-to-city journey and a Saturday Blagaj outing can fit a two-base trip without one. Hire becomes more useful when you add a stop such as Konjic, move Blagaj to Sunday, stay outside the cities or want control over the intercity days.
Price the days that need driving rather than defaulting to the whole week.
An illustrative two-base week
For two adults with two medium suitcases, this weekday-to-weekday pattern gives six nights in two bases:

| Day | Plan | Transport choice |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | Arrive; first night in Sarajevo. | Arrange the airport-to-stay journey. |
| Thursday | Sarajevo city day; second night there. | Walk and use city transport as needed. |
| Friday | Travel to Mostar; first of three nights there. | Search a dated train or bus journey and include both station journeys. |
| Saturday | Blagaj excursion from Mostar. | Match an outward and return local bus, including access to its stops. |
| Sunday | Mostar city day. | Keep Blagaj off the day with no listed line 10 service. |
| Monday | Return to Sarajevo; sixth night. | Choose the return departure separately. |
| Tuesday | Fly home. | Arrange the final airport journey. |
For the intercity legs, use the Sarajevo–Mostar comparison and search each actual travel date.
Use Saturday for Blagaj
The Mostar Bus timetable effective 14 September 2026 lists line 10 between Sjeverni logor and Blagaj on working days and Saturdays, with no service on Sundays or holidays. Line 12 through Blagaj to Malo polje is listed for working days only.
In the Saturday column, line 10 includes 08:00 and 12:00 departures from Sjeverni logor and a 12:40 departure from Blagaj. The 08:00 outward and 12:40 return are a pair to assess for a morning visit. A 12:00 outward does not leave a 40-minute visit because that interval includes the outward journey. Add the journey to Sjeverni logor and the walk or onward trip from the Blagaj stop.
If Blagaj must be on Sunday, change the days or arrange another mode. That one gap does not make a car necessary for the Sarajevo and Mostar city days. Use the current timetable and service notices when fixing the excursion.
When a car changes the trip
Keep the same city nights but add an unhurried Konjic stop on Friday and move Blagaj to Sunday. A rental from Friday to Monday can now cover the flexible intercity days, the stop and the Sunday outing. It also brings fuel, Mostar parking and collection and return into the plan.
This is the point at which hire begins to add experience rather than merely replace a train or bus. Compare that shorter rental with the original two-base route before extending it across the city days.
Count rental periods accurately
For an illustrative week without a clock change, collect on Friday at 10:00 and return on Monday at 10:00, both in Sarajevo local time. That is exactly 72 hours, or three 24-hour periods.
A full Wednesday 10:00 to Tuesday 10:00 comparison is 144 hours: six, not seven, 24-hour periods. Adjust both windows to your confirmed collection and return. Ask how the provider charges any extra hours, then compare offers with the same drivers, equipment and cover and add fuel and parking.
Check the two suitcases against the offered vehicle. If the party grows, use the van-or-two-cars comparison. If the final departure moves to Mostar, reassess the different-city return.

Keep planning
Should I take the train, bus, a hire car or a transfer from Sarajevo to Mostar?
Should I collect a rental car in Mostar or arrive without one?
