Places to stay
Where should I stay in Sarajevo for Old Town days or an early departure?
Information checked 18 October 2026.
The short answer
Stay in or beside the Old Town for days around Baščaršija, City Hall and the Latin Bridge, especially if you want evenings in the historic centre. Choose Marijin Dvor when the museums along Zmaja od Bosne or access to the main rail and bus stations matter more.
For several Old Town days and one early departure, one reliable transfer is usually easier than a final-night hotel move. Start with the journeys you will make every day, then plan the exceptional one.
Old Town for repeated sightseeing
The Old Town is a natural base when the historic centre is the main reason for your visit. For example, Hotel President is at Bazardžani 1, close to City Hall, the Latin Bridge, Sebilj, the cathedral and several major religious landmarks.
That closeness makes a real difference over several days. You can return to your room between visits, start early before the busiest part of the day and head out again in the evening without another cross-city journey. On an early station or airport morning, however, arrange a dependable ride rather than assuming a walk with luggage will be simple.
Hotel President lists an airport shuttle for a surcharge. Ask the hotel for the current price and available times before relying on it.
Marijin Dvor for museums and onward travel
Marijin Dvor works well for a museum-centred stay. Hotel Holiday is at Zmaja od Bosne 4. The National Museum is at Zmaja od Bosne 3 and gives Tehnička škola as its tram stop. The History Museum is at Zmaja od Bosne 5.
Together, these addresses form a compact museum corridor. This area can also suit business appointments or plans focused on the western side of the centre. The main railway station is at Put života 2, and the intercity bus station is at Put života 8. Before deciding to walk, check the route from your hotel entrance to the correct station entrance and consider how it will feel with luggage.
The compromise is that you will travel into the Old Town for its sights and evenings. If almost every day begins in Baščaršija, a little convenience on departure morning may not make up for those repeated journeys.
Handle an early train as a separate journey
The ŽFBH 2025/2026 annual timetable gives a useful example: southbound train 723 is shown leaving Sarajevo at 07:15. Check the timetable again for your travel date and destination, but this illustrates why the first journey of the morning deserves its own plan.
Visit Sarajevo’s transport overview lists tram 1 between Baščaršija and the train and bus stations. It is helpful for understanding the route, but check the first service for your date before relying on it for an early train. From an Old Town hotel, a pre-booked taxi or transfer may be the simplest option.
Work backwards from the departure time: allow time to reach the platform, find the station entrance, make the journey from the hotel and complete checkout. Only include breakfast in the plan if the hotel serves it before you need to leave. If your stay begins after midnight, the hotel arrival-time guide explains which night to book.
Choose between two realistic patterns
Three Old Town days, then an early train: stay in the Old Town and arrange one direct journey to the station. This keeps the main part of the visit easy.
A short museum-centred stay with onward rail or coach travel: compare places in Marijin Dvor using their exact addresses. Include the route to your departure station and any trips you still want to make into the Old Town.
Whichever pattern suits you, compare the room price with the cost and effort of the local journeys it creates. Factor in your luggage, confirm which hotel entrance your driver should use and check the pickup time for your exact travel date. Sarajevo has several practical bases; the best choice is the one that saves you the most repeated effort.
